Metallica Streams Old Brazil Shows as Tour is Suspended

Metallica recently put up for streaming 18 songs from past shows in Brazil.

The move sought to ease frustration over the rescheduling of four concerts in the country (due to the coronavirus pandemic).

Sadly, Metallica’s first visit to the South American giant was left out of Live In Brazil (1993 – 2017). The year was 1989 and the band was wrapping up the “Damaged Justice Tour.”

Star photographer Ross Halfin, owner of two pictures in this post, was in Brazil with Metallica and shared his memories on Facebook: “This was the end of the Justice For All tour and I’ve never been so glad as I wouldn’t have to listen to that song for a while. The picture of Hetfield and I was my last picture with long hair ever. After we took that he grabbed his shaver and I thought he was joking, but he took a chunk out of my hair. It looked so ridiculous I had to stand there and let him do the rest.”

Back to the new release, the earliest concert there took place on the Brazilian Labor Day weekend of 1993. The three available songs are “The Unforgiven,” “Of Wolf and Men” and “Fade To Black.”

Live In Brazil (1993 – 2017) has songs recorded in São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro and Porto Alegre. Here’s the complete tracklist:

The May 1999 show in Rio de Janeiro was held at a stadium owned by the Flamengo soccer club. Sir Elton John performed there four years earlier on his “Made in England” tour.

Metallica’s Peruvian fans were last week treated to a full concert held in the capital Lima six years ago.

The called-off shows in Brazil were rescheduled to December.
